PlayStation’s September 2026 State of Play delivered more than 30 game updates across its main presentation and the State of Play Japan broadcast on September 3. The biggest news included a release date for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, a firm date for Until Dawn 2, new Grand Theft Auto VI hardware, Maneater 2, Metro 2039, and several major 2027 releases.

For PS5 players trying to separate the major announcements from everything else shown during the broadcasts, these are the 10 reveals that mattered most.

PlayStation State of Play September 2026 biggest announcements featuring major PS5 games and reveals

1. Final Fantasy VII revelation launches April 8, 2027

Square Enix closed the main State of Play with one of the show’s biggest updates: Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch for PS5 on April 8, 2027.

The game is the final chapter of Square Enix’s three-part Final Fantasy VII remake project, and the new presentation went beyond simply attaching a date to it.

The extended footage showed a much broader look at exploration, including travel aboard the Highwind, grapple guns, chocobos, towns, and larger environments. Square Enix also showed the game’s FITS combat system and character synergies.

For anyone waiting to see how the remake trilogy ends, April is now the date to circle.

2. Until Dawn 2 gets a January release date

Until Dawn 2 January 28, 2027 release date with Blackwood Sanatorium

Until Dawn 2 now has a firm launch date.

Firesprite’s PS5 horror sequel will release on January 28, 2027, with a new trailer taking the Dead True crew back to Blackwood Sanatorium before moving the story to Akishima Island.

Choice and consequence remain central to the sequel. The footage again emphasized decisions that can alter what happens to the characters, keeping the structure recognizable for players familiar with the original Until Dawn.

Firesprite is developing the game in collaboration with AdHoc Studio, the team behind Dispatch.

3. GTA 6 is getting two limited-edition DualSense controllers

Grand Theft Auto VI didn’t need a new game announcement to become part of the conversation.

Sony revealed two limited-edition DualSense controllers inspired by GTA 6 and Vice City: a Black Limited Edition and a White Limited Edition.

Pre-orders open September 10, while both controllers are scheduled to launch November 19, the same day Grand Theft Auto VI is currently set to release on PS5.

That makes this one of the more immediately relevant announcements from the show. Players interested in either controller won’t have to wait months for the next update. The first decision point arrives within days.

4. Maneater 2 is officially happening

Maneater 2 shark attacking a luxury island resort, coming to PS5 in 2027

Tripwire Interactive is bringing back its shark action series with Maneater 2.

The sequel moves the chaos to an ultra-luxury private island theme park where a man-eating bull shark escapes during an invite-only preview event. Players will once again eat, explore, and evolve, while the island also introduces bioengineered predators standing between the shark and freedom.

Maneater 2 is coming to PS5 in 2027. Sony and Tripwire have not announced a more specific release date yet.

It’s a straightforward sequel announcement, but also one of the show’s clearest surprise reveals.

5. Metro 2039 shows PS5 Pro gameplay and confirms February 2027 launch

Metro 2039 PS5 Pro gameplay in post-apocalyptic Moscow ahead of February 4, 2027 release

4A Games used State of Play to show the first PS5 Pro gameplay from Metro 2039.

The new entry returns to post-apocalyptic Moscow with a mysterious protagonist known as the Stranger. Its single-player campaign will again combine exploration, survival, combat, and stealth, maintaining several of the elements closely associated with the series.

More importantly, there’s now a date.

Metro 2039 launches on PS5 on February 4, 2027.

That puts it only a week after Until Dawn 2, making late January and early February increasingly crowded for PS5 players.

6. Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance expands the hunt in 2027

Monster Hunter Wilds Ascendance expansion featuring Skybound Eyrie and new monsters, coming in 2027

Capcom revealed a major expansion for Monster Hunter Wilds called Ascendance.

The expansion is scheduled for 2027 and will add new monsters, mechanics, a new locale, and another chapter in the Expedition Team’s story. Capcom also introduced the Skybound Eyrie area, a Boost Action mechanic, and additional Elder Dragons.

Players won’t necessarily have to wait until release to see how some of those additions feel.

Capcom plans to bring a playable Ascendance demo to Tokyo Game Show 2026 featuring a hunt against the newly revealed Arakeeta.

A precise launch date hasn’t been announced.

7. Gran Turismo 7 is getting a major two-part Spec IV update

Gran Turismo 7 isn’t finished expanding.

Polyphony Digital announced that the Spec IV update will roll out in two parts later in 2026, with releases planned for October and December.

Across those updates, players can expect two new circuits, 12 cars, and additional modes. The additions include Online Drift Trials, Shuffle Races, and a Family mode designed to accommodate players with different experience levels.

For an established PS5 title rather than an upcoming release, that’s a substantial content drop and gives current GT7 players something concrete to watch over the final months of the year.

8. Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is coming in 2027
Another long-running series is returning.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 was confirmed for PS5 with a 2027 release window.

The new game will once again allow players to create their own hero and develop a fighting style before taking on characters and threats from the wider Dragon Ball universe.

Sony and Bandai Namco haven’t provided an exact release date yet, so the next meaningful update will be when that broad 2027 window gets narrowed down.

9. Final Fantasy Resonance has a demo available now

Not every announcement requires waiting until next year.

Square Enix used State of Play to reveal that the entire first chapter of Final Fantasy Resonance is available as a demo on the PlayStation Store, with save data carrying over into the full game. Pre-orders are also live.

The trailer revealed another recognizable name: Sephiroth.

Players will be able to find and challenge the One-Winged Angel for a special unlockable reward.

The full game is scheduled to launch on October 22, 2026, making this one of the announcements players can act on immediately rather than adding to a 2027 wishlist.

10. Gundam Rogue Orbit gets a March 2027 release date

Gundam Rogue Orbit RX-78-2 Gundam in space ahead of March 5, 2027 PS5 release

Gundam Rogue Orbit also left State of Play with a concrete date: March 5, 2027.

The latest trailer focused heavily on combat and customization. Players can change mobile suit parts in ways that affect movement and combat, use different weapon types and Tactical Skills, and customize their unit’s appearance.

A MOD Skin can also transform the player’s machine into the iconic look of the RX-78-2 Gundam.

For Gundam fans, the important change here is that the game has moved from something to keep an eye on to a dated release.

There was much more than the top 10

PlayStation State of Play September 2026 infographic showing additional game announcements, demos and major PS5 releases through 2027

Sony’s September event was unusually dense because the main State of Play was followed by State of Play Japan.

Beyond the ten highlights above, Sony confirmed or showed games including Fate/Extra Record, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, CONQ: Crown of No Quarter, Rhapsody in Scarlet, Where the Seeds Fall, The Eminence in Shadow: Phantom Echoes, Daba: Land of Water Scar, and World Phasebound Control Authority: WPCA.

Keeper also received a surprise PS5 launch during the event, while SlashZero and Stupid Never Dies received playable demos. PlayStation Plus subscribers got their own updates, including Mycopunk joining Game Catalog later this year and additional classics headed to PlayStation Plus Premium.

The immediate takeaway is a much clearer PS5 calendar stretching from the final months of 2026 into 2027. Marvel’s Wolverine is only days away on September 15, GTA 6 remains scheduled for November 19, and the first months of 2027 now have Until Dawn 2, Metro 2039, Gundam Rogue Orbit, and Final Fantasy VII Revelation positioned within a relatively tight window.
