The PS5 Pro is becoming harder to find in the United States as Grand Theft Auto VI moves closer to launch, but the sudden prices appearing online need some context.
Sony has not raised the PS5 Pro’s official US price in the past few days. The console remains at a recommended retail price of $899.99, following a price increase Sony announced on March 27 and put into effect on April 2, 2026.
What is changing now is the buying environment around the console. GTA 6 received an extended official showcase on August 27, and Rockstar lists the game for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. With one of the year’s biggest releases getting closer, premium PlayStation hardware is back in the spotlight.

The PS5 Pro already became much more expensive in April
The current situation makes more sense when Sony’s official pricing is separated from third-party reseller pricing.
Sony announced a broad round of PlayStation hardware price increases on March 27, citing continued pressure in the global economic environment. In the United States, the changes took effect on April 2.
| Console | US recommended price |
| PS5 Digital Edition | $599.99 |
| PS5 | $649.99 |
| PS5 Pro | $899.99 |
Sony did not connect that price increase to GTA 6. That distinction matters because social posts can make the PS5 Pro’s $899.99 price look like a fresh change caused by Rockstar’s game. It is not.
The PS5 Pro originally launched in the United States at $699.99 in November 2024. Its current recommended price is therefore $200 higher than its launch MSRP.

GTA 6 has given players a new reason to look at PS5 hardware
Rockstar published Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look on August 27, 2026. Rockstar says the footage was captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5.
The timing matters for buyers. GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Players who were already waiting for a major release before upgrading now have a concrete date in front of them.
That does not mean every PS5 Pro purchase is being driven by GTA 6, and it does not prove that Rockstar’s presentation alone caused every stock shortage. It does, however, put the console into a much more active buying window ahead of a major release.

High reseller prices are not Sony’s new MSRP
If a PS5 Pro appears far above $899.99 on a marketplace, that price should not be confused with another official Sony increase. Third-party sellers can set their own asking prices when retail inventory is limited.
For a player shopping specifically for GTA 6, paying a large reseller premium is difficult to justify on the information currently available. GTA 6 is officially coming to the standard PS5 as well as Xbox Series X|S, so a PS5 Pro is not a requirement to play the game.
There is also time before launch. A temporary shortage in early September does not establish what inventory will look like in November.
The business side matters to players
The bigger story is how a major game launch can change hardware demand even before the game itself ships. GTA 6 arrives late in the current console generation, when many players already own compatible systems but others have been waiting for a reason to upgrade.
Sony has a premium product positioned for that audience, but the economics are tougher than they were at the PS5 Pro’s launch. At $899.99, the console sits $200 above its original US launch price before the cost of a game, accessories, or the separately sold disc drive.
For Sony, GTA 6 can create fresh demand for PlayStation hardware. For players, the same demand can mean tighter stock and more aggressive marketplace pricing. Those are two sides of the same launch cycle.
Should you buy a PS5 Pro before GTA 6?
For US buyers, the number to keep in mind is $899.99. That is Sony’s current recommended retail price for the PS5 Pro.
A substantially higher marketplace listing is a reseller premium, not proof of a new Sony price increase. Unless a buyer needs the console immediately, waiting for authorized retail inventory can avoid paying hundreds of dollars above MSRP.
Players should also be careful with performance claims. Rockstar has confirmed the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and has highlighted PlayStation 5 in its current marketing, but buyers should not treat every claim about PS5 Pro performance as confirmed until Rockstar or Sony provides the relevant technical details.
The next major question is whether PS5 Pro inventory stabilizes before GTA 6 launches on November 19. That will determine whether the current pressure remains a short-lived stock issue or becomes a bigger part of the holiday hardware market.
